This past week I flew out to Washington DC for my mother’s graduation for she officially completed her Master’s Degree in Project Management. I had to read that back again cause it still does not seem real. All that hard work paid off! We stayed in an apartment complex called The Avenue right across the street from the George Washington University. Her convocation was held at The George Washington University campus where she was among hundreds of graduates celebrating their academic victory at the finish line. After the celebration and some good grub, we visited historical sites such as the infamous Lincoln memorial where the historic statue of the former U.S. president sat while on his left reads his 2nd inaugural speech and the Gettysburg address is written to the right. Following Lincoln’s memorial came a visit to the memorial of social activist Martin Luther King whose statue overlooks the Potomac River. I even stood in the exact spot where he delivered his bone-chilling “I Have A Dream” speech to over 250,000 onlookers on August 28th, 1963 in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Let’s just say that the term “historic” isn’t even a word at this point. World War II and the Korean War memorial sites were also visited during this trip. Seeing the stars and faces of those who lost their lives in both wars were extremely touching for I had a relative who was a paratrooper in the Korean War (R.I.P.). Of course, what’s Washington DC without a trip to the White House, the house that Reagan, Clinton, Kennedy lived in and now Obama. I was joking around with my Grandmother that I wanted to have a word with Obama regarding a potential babysitter for Bo and Sunny, the presidential canines. In the words of Nas “I’m out for presidents to represent me…” NOT!
The last day in Washington was spent nicely with a trip to the National Air and Space Museum where the space nerd in me went ballistic and took pictures of pretty much everything. From shots of P-51D planes to the largest space rocket ever created (Saturn 5 in case you were wondering), it’s safe to say that Washington DC was good to us these four days. We will meet again!
