#ShesGotSoleXO: Batul

Alright, I know you’re probably wondering what happened to my #ShesgotSoleXO campaign. Well, I live in a city where it snows for 6 months straight and I ain’t tryna have these girls posted up in the snow in their freshest kicks. But it’s all good cause it’s the summer season aka the season where sneaker heads open up their sneaker boxes and flex the latest sneaker heat under the heat. During the winter season, I was stuck on who to feature next for the campaign. I recall explaining the concept to a young lady named Ashley while networking at an event. A few days later, Ashley sent me a DM suggesting that I feature her friend Batul, a local lady that is a lover of sneakers. Upon seeing her Instagram page, I had to hit her up! She was a lover of Jordans from the Bordeaux 12’s to the Motorsport 4’s, yeah she definitely got sole! I hit Batul up in the DM and the vibe was dope off the rip! We discussed her love for sneakers and I convinced her to hit up the Nike Factory one time after seeing that I copped a pair of Gold Air Max 95 Premiums for $69. I knew that working with Batul was gonna be chill for she struck me as a woman who was very content, independent and not afraid to speak her mind. And I got just that vibe when I met her in the flesh.

She pulled up in an all white BMW that day with the windows tinted. She hopped out wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey with the number 33 across the chest. Automatically I knew it was none other than MJ’s wingman Scottie Pippen. On her feet were the “Win Like 96” Jordan 11’s. When Pippen was drafted to the Bulls in 1987, Jordan was tough on him and he was constantly pushing his teammates to be nothing but the best. He would trash talk Pippen not for personal reasons,  but to let Pippen know that he saw potential in him. He endured everything Michael threw at him and together, they went on to winning 6 NBA Championships, one of the years being 1996.  After hugging Batul, I proceeded to capture some shots of her posted up inside, outside and on top of the BMW. She told me that she wasn’t great when it came to posing for photos, my response to her was to be herself and that’s exactly what she did. When talking to Batul, I really got to understand her as a person and not just the sneakers on her feet. She told me that she values hard work and constantly puts pressure on herself to attain excellence. She comes from a family where hard work is an understatement and she thanks her mother for that.  With the BMW, she wanted to end the close-minded idea that a  woman who drives a nice car doesn’t necessarily have to be an Instagram model in tight clothing attire. She can have on a Pippen jersey while a fresh pair of 11’s bless her feet and she can grind just as hard. Keep on winning like Jordan in 96 Batul! Check out her #ShesGotSoleXO segment below =)

Who is Batul?

Batul is a hard-working, strong independent girl who lets nothing get in her way. Once I am motivated to do something my mind sticks to it. I’m also obsessed with Jordans. I like to be that girl who walks into the room and the first thing people notice are my shoes. I like people to remember me as the girl with the clean shoes. I have a pretty vintage style which has a lot to do with my love for sneakers.

What and who empowers you?

I wanna say my mama empowers me. As cliché as that sounds my mom has also been my role model. She motivates me to be the strongest I can be and not to be afraid of who I am. My mom has influenced me to be the best I can be and truly has made me the strong lady I am today.

For our shoot, you pulled up in a fresh, all white BMW! Why did you choose to incorporate the car into the shoot?

The reason I chose the BMW for this shoot is to get rid of the stereotype that a girl who drives a BMW has to be a classy, well off woman. I wanna show that I can be driving BMW and have dope style.

When did you start getting into sneakers?

Honestly I started getting into sneakers when I was in high school and I went to a high school were literally every girl had the same style. When I started getting into sneakers I would get told that I dress like a guy or that I wasn’t girly enough But I didn’t let what people say get in the way of my love for sneakers. I kept rocking them and sooner or later the same people who dissed me were rocking the same kicks.

What role do sneakers play in your life?

Sneaker play one of the biggest roles in my everyday life. Literally sneakers can make or break my outfits. I always plan my outfit around what sneakers I am going to be rocking that day. Because literally my sneakers can make or break my outfit. I’m always checking out new releases every day, planning my next purchase.

You wore the Jordan 11 “Win Like 96” sneakers for our shoot. Why did you choose this sneaker?

For this shoot I chose to wear my Gym red 11’s. The reason I chose these shoes is because red is honestly my favourite colour. It’s that one colour that represents me and you can literally catch me in red 5/7 days of the week. I love that it’s such a vibrant colour which represents my personality.

What are your thoughts on women coming up and making their presence known in the sneaker community?

I think women coming up in the social community is dope. There’s always been that stereotype of how girls who wear sneakers are “ratchet” and I think it’s so dope that we have women making their own lines throughout the sneaker community and making that statement that girls can rock sneakers too. I want to see women being praised for wearing sneakers. Like when girl walks into a room that all heads turn and people say “damn that girl got some sexy sneakers on and she’s lookin’ fly.”

What is it like to walk in your shoes?

Honestly I live a normal life. I work, go to school, hang out with friends etc. I do face challenges on the daily but I’ve learnt to overcome them and I know how just to not care about what people think. I like to be the happiest me.

What’s a challenge that you find yourself dealing with on the daily?

The biggest challenge I face would be being an Arab girl in the sneaker community. I feel like I get judged a lot for the style I chose to rock and how it’s not classy.

What does the future hold for Batul?

Honestly I don’t know what the future holds for me. I like to live my life day by day so I can enjoy it. Where ever I end up in the future is in God’s hands.
